As summer temperatures climb, the North Carolina Department of Labor is reminding employers and workers to take proactive steps to prevent heat-related illnesses on the job.
Labor Commissioner Luke Farley emphasized the importance of preparedness and shared responsibility in avoiding heat stress during outdoor work.
“Heat illness is preventable,” said Farley. “Whether you’re in the field, on a construction site, or working outdoors in any capacity, the keys to staying safe are simple: rest, water, and shade. Safety is a shared responsibility, and by working together, we can make sure everyone goes home safe and healthy at the end of the day.”
The department’s “Beat the Heat” campaign is a renewed initiative aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses and injuries. The campaign offers employers and employees access to practical resources and safety tools, including:
- A heat safety calculator
- A real-time heat index mobile app
- Hazard alerts and training videos
- Agriculture-specific tools, such as podcasts and sample safety programs

In addition, workers and employers can request a free, wallet-sized card that includes a QR code linking to mobile heat safety resources.
“This isn’t about new regulations,” Farley said. “It’s about common-sense steps and working together to protect the people who provide for their families and power our economy.”
The department encourages all outdoor workers and their employers to stay alert to heat risks and incorporate preventative practices into daily routines as high temperatures persist.
